So What Do Indians Do at the Gym, Really?

There are some folks who try their best to train in the area where a hot girl is working out. Some are brave enough to surpass their heroism and try to ask her number to try to get a date.

So what do Indians do at gym anyways? Apart from working out, of course!

I can’t help but smile when I go to the gym here in Sweden. I have vivid pictures of my time in a gym in India just some time ago, and I thought it is going to be the same when I moved here. But I am taken to a different world altogether when I work out here. A very professional-no-nonsense working out arena, where people come merely to work out and nothing else. Everyone is dressed up in their tight branded track pants or shorts, expensive trainers, all set to sweat it out. Going to the gym is just not a fitness mantra here it’s part of their lives.

You hardly find anyone with paunchy waistlines, saggy arms, love-handles or bicep-less. I exaggerate; exceptions are everywhere. Here is my sunnier take on my fellow Indian gym enthusiasts ,who manage to do a lot at the gym apart from mere working out:

1. Check out the hot chicks: There are some folks who try their best to train in the area where a hot girl is working out. Some are brave enough to surpass their heroism and try to ask her number to try to get a date.

2. Do easy exercises that don’t strain them: The very idea of going to the gym is to extend your limits, not try out simple and easy exercises that don’t tire you. But these guys don’t get the idea, you see.

3. Take a break every 20 minutes in a one-hour work out: Now that’s hilarious. Most will try to find time to check their phone, change the music, drink water, check out what rest of the folks are doing, etc., etc., etc.

4. Never understand the calories-burning-weight loss ratio: They balance the training with their eating regimen. Definitely training poops you out, but the idea is to eat more proteins and health drinks, but some will hoard up on carbs and fats, which they plan to work out .Their ferfrain, “Yaar aaj to bohot train kia, Let me satiate my hunger.”

5. Go to the gym for seven days a month and lament that nothing is happening. There is this crazy group who hit the gym only when they are pushed by their wives, girlfriends, husbands or obesity, and then complain, “My weight is the same, but I had been going to the gym for six months now.”

6. Listen to music: If you go to a typical Indian gym, don’t be surprised to find them humming lyrics and grooving to the tunes of “Lungi Dance “ or “1, 2 ,4 get on the dance floor.” Eavesdrop on some of the music on the headphones of some friends, and you will stop in your tracks.

7. Ogling at a stranger and exclaiming “What does he do to get a body like that?” They work out hard, eat right and some of them have naturally good genes. Not everybody is born with the sexy legs, or tight abs that you are craving, but some really need to push their way to end up the way they are now. So there is your answer? Work your ass off!

8. Going to the gym is a style statement: So you are having this conversation with an old friend and what is new in his life and are met with “Going to the gym is my new thing!”

Flaunting in front of friends as if you have achieved a feat just by registering at a gym.

In India, we are worn out by the traffic, the heavy workload, late nights at the office, unpredictable weather conditions. We often are not blessed with the right girl, so the gym is an attractive option. We have lovely food that is simply irresistible and nobody, but nobody can beat Bollywood music.

Still, we can actually do the workout, even with all the distractions and accouterments.
