It's Now Or Never For India-US Nuclear Deal
The U.S. ambassador to India says time is running out on the landmark U.S.-India nuclear deal.
“It is unlikely that this deal will be offered again to India,” Ambassador David Mulford told an Indian TV channel. The agreement reverses three decades of American anti-proliferation policy by allowing the U.S. to sell nuclear fuel and technology to India. In return, India has agreed to separate its military and civilian reactors and place the civilian ones under international inspections. The agreement has come under stiff opposition from India’s communist parties, who accuse the U.S. of seeking to control Indian foreign policy. Mulford expressed surprise at the opposition, “I think Americans are puzzled that this agreement was not immediately embraced and activated by India.” |
