Spellers Beware!

 All those Indian-American kids who thought they could get away without learning Hindi are sure tripping up at the National Spelling Bee, because Hindi words have been added to the list of tongue-twisters! Who would have thought words like kundalini, swaraj and mandir would enter the American lexicon? At this year’s spelling bee, breaking a long tradition, there were no Indian winners. One of the kids mangled raita, spelling it wrieta! Now, that’s a matter of our izzat – yep, izzat was a word on the list too! |
