U.S. Immigration authorities have suspended the deportation of a 17-year-old Indian student to allow him to continue his college studies. Yves Gomes’ case has been highlighted by pro-organization groups to illustrate the unfairness of U.S. immigration policy. He had come to the U.S. as a 14-month-old child. His parents Robin Gomes and Cecilia Gomes were deported earlier for being undocumented. His younger brother 15-year-old Aaron is a U.S. citizen. Yves is one of only about 400 people who were granted a reprieve from among the nearly 400,000 deported annually. He told the media, “I don’t label myself as an illegal immigrant. I consider myself American.” |
