A Mumbai company is testing a computer model to predict the outcomes of World Cricket Cup games.

Fractal Analytics, which provides analytics services to businesses, is now applying the technology to predict the performance of sports team and individual players by utilizing data for almost 2,500 one-day international matches played to date. The model analyzes performances in recent and past matches to predict cricket scores.

The program proved eerily accurate in predicting Pakistan’s defeat to the West Indies in the inaugural World Cup. But after trumpeting the initial success, which was widely reported in the media, the company was squeamish about putting out any fresh predictions. Is it because, as a company spokesman said, “To keep the fun in the game we should fail sometimes.”

Funny, we could do that on our own without turning to a sophisticated computer model.
