Affirmative Action For Whites

The new policy reduces the guaranteed placements based on SAT scores and grade point averages

Asian American groups are protesting a new admissions policy deemphasizing test scores and grades at the University of California system, which could potentially reduce their numbers by as much as 20 percent.

The new policy reduces the guaranteed placements based on SAT scores and grade point averages, which traditionally have advantaged Asian American students. Last year more than 40% of students at the University of California Los Angeles and the University of California Berkeley were Asian American, against a state population of 12% and a national population of 4%. Asian students constitute a majority at the University of California San Diego and University of California Irvine.

Ling-chi Wang, a retired professor at UC Berkeley complained, “I like to call it affirmative action for whites.”
