Eight New IITs

India is plans to establish eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) at a cost of $1.5 billion.

The new IITs will be set up in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Punjab and Rajasthan.
The existing IITs have a capacity of only 6,000 students, allowing admission of under 2 percent of the nearly 300,000 students who appear in the Joint Entrance Examination.

 

The new IITs will launch their initial classes with enrollments of 120 students each on their temporary campuses in existing IITs in Madras, Guwahati, Kanpur, Delhi and Kharagpur.
