Over 92 per cent roads in Washington are in “poor state”, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who recently undertook a week-long visit to the United States, said, citing a report. Chouhan had earlier said that roads in Madhya Pradesh are better than those in the United States, inviting a lot of negative reaction on social media.

The BJP politician’s comments were mocked by Opposition parties like Congress and people on social media, who posted pictures of roads with potholes in Madhya Pradesh. Chouhan later responded to the taunts by saying that he had the super corridor from the Indore airport to the city in mind when he made the comment. He called it a “world class road”, adding that he did not refer to every road in Madhya Pradesh.

“When I got down at the Washington airport and traveled on the road, I felt the roads in Madhya Pradesh are better than the United States… I am saying this not just for the sake of saying,” Chouhan was reported to have said in Washington while addressing a round-table meeting organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum.

The CM said that while the United States may be ahead in some matters, India is better off than the western nation in others, such as women’s empowerment.

“In the U.S., a woman was about to become president but she lost. In India, women have held all the top posts … got elected from panchayat to Parliament. They have been elected president and prime minister. So, we are ahead as far as women empowerment is concerned,” he said.

He added that the media in the United States is biased whereas Indian media critiqued everyone fairly. He also said this is the “golden era” of U.S.-India relations.

Some users on social media used the hashtag #MPRoads to make light of his comments.
