Whose Pashmina
A pashimna trading group in Pakistan is protesting an attempt by a Jammu & Kashmir handicrafts association to register a Geographical Indicator tag for “Kashmiri Pashmina,” the rare soft wool from the underbelly of the capra hircus goat.
The handicrafts association wants to distinguish the wool from imitations as the popularity of pashmina has soared. Pakistani traders say Indians do not have the exclusive rights to the Kashmiri Pashmina name and that their wool is just as good. |
