Two Convicted for Fatally Stabbing Indian Origin Man in UK
Balbir Johal, 48, a logistics planner, was attacked in the Southall suburb of west London by Hassan Mohammed and Yassin Yussuf.
A London court has sentenced two men to a total of 40 years in jail for fatally stabbing an Indian origin man earlier this year.
According to a police release, 48-year-old Balbir Johal, a logistics planner, was attacked in the Southall suburb of west London on Mar. 19 and rushed to a hospital with stab wounds but died shortly later. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Homicide and Major Crime Command launched a murder investigation and charged Hassan Mohammed, 24, and Yassin Yussuf, 21, with murdering Johal.
At an Old Bailey court hearing in London on Oct. 23, Mohamed was sentenced to 26 years imprisonment and told he must serve the full term before being considered for release.
Yaasiin Yussuf, who has no fixed abode, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 14 years imprisonment and an additional three years on license on release.
He will serve nine-and-a-half years in prison before being considered for release, the police said in a release.
On Mar. 19, Ealing Hospital staff informed the police that Balbir Johal had been admitted to hospital with stab injuries. Johal, from Slough, died a short time later. A post-mortem examination three days later found the cause of death to be a hemorrhage from a stab wound to the right femoral vein.
The Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command launched a murder investigation and detectives established through their enquiries that Johal was involved in an altercation with two men on Marlborough Road, Southall on Mar.19 evening.
Police said that two men in a white Mercedes pulled up alongside Johal before getting out and speaking to him and one then returned to the vehicle and brought a knife from the car before chasing and fatally stabbing Johal.
Johal was rushed to a hospital by a family member and treated for his injuries but could not be saved, the statement said.
On Mar. 20, Mohamed and Yussuf were stopped by police on Friary Road in Acton. They were in the car that had been captured on CCTV and were arrested on suspicion of murder and subsequently charged.
Detective Chief Inspector Nicky Wall, of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said, “This fateful encounter, despite the best efforts of medical staff, cost Balbir his life.
“Those who carry and use knives must face the consequences of their actions and we hope these sentences serve as a deterrent to anyone else thinking of carrying dangerous weapons on our streets.”
