Shambo

Shambo, a 6-year-old bull in Carmarthenshire, Wales, who became an international celebrity after Hindu groups launched a public campaign to save his life after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, has been slaughtered.

Hundreds of monks and their supporters at the Skanda Vale Hindu community blocked Shambo’s enclosure and a web camera in his shed broadcast live images of the last minute struggle on July 27. Police had to remove scores of worshippers who formed a human shield around the bull.

“Ignorant people have chosen to desecrate our temple and have chosen to destroy life unnecessarily,” a Skanda spokesman said.

The group waged a protracted legal battle to block the slaughter, which was ordered by health officials after the bull tested positive for tuberculosis in April.

A post mortem of the bull confirmed the TB strain and Skanda officials now fear that additional cattle may be culled from their 60 bull herd.
