Parents of an 11-year-old Indian American denied admission to a New York public school for gifted children are protesting the school district’s racial quota rules that locked her out.
Nikita Rau, 11, who was denied admission the Mark Twain Intermediate School for gifted children, told The New York Post, “I feel bad because I would have gotten in if I was white.” The school reserves 60 percent of its seats for white students and 40 percent for minorities. As a result white students need a score of 77 on New York’s standardized test to get into the school, against a score of 84.4 required by minorities. Rau scored 79. |
