A Non-Resident Indian software professional, who was booked in a rape case, was arrested by police on Sept.27 at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. He was arrested when he arrived in India from Dubai that day.

Dubai based NRI, Safdar Abbas Zaidi, aged 30, was arrested by Malkajgiri police for allegedly cheating a woman on the pretext of marrying her, reported Times of India. Both belong to Darulshifa, Hyderabad.

The victim had lodged a complaint against Zaidi, which became the base to register a rape case against him in February 2018. After the case got registered, a Look Out Notice (LOC) was issued against him and all the police stations and airport authorities were alerted. When he reached India on Sept.27, immigration officials took him in custody and handed him over to Malkajgiri police, added the report.

Telangana Today cited the police as saying that the victim woman and the accused NRI were working in a private firm four years ago, where they fell in love with each other. Police said, “He promised to marry her and sexually assaulted her. Later, one after the other, both went to Dubai. There, he got her converted to his religion.”

Last year both returned to India and convinced their parents for the marriage and the wedding was fixed for April this year. He later called off the wedding. After Zaidi’s refusal to marry, the victim filed a police complaint against him.

Malkajgiri Police Inspector A. Manmohan told the newspaper that Zaidi was booked under sections 376 (rape), 417 and 420 (cheating) of Indian Penal Code.

A report in Telangana Today quoted the victim’s mother as saying in her complaint that “They asked her to get her name changed in a legal document at Haj House here to avoid issues during migration.” She had also suspected that their daughter was cheated in the name of marriage to get her converted.

Zaidi has been produced in the court and sent into judicial remand. Probe into the allegations against him is on.
