A Houston physician couple has been charged with running a pill mill.

Dr. Arun Sharma and his wife, Dr. Kiran Sharma, are charged with a $9 million medical fraud scheme, including illegitimately dispensing hundreds of thousands of prescription pain pills through their Allergy, Asthma, Arthritis and Pain Centers in Webster and Baytown, Texas.
Law enforcement agents recovered nearly $1.5 million in cash from their home and safe deposit boxes.

According to the FBI, Dr. Arun Sharma prescribed 615,671 tablets of Vicosan, 66,000 tablets of Xanax and 26,000 tablets of Valium over a nine-month period from September 2008 to May 2009, charging $100 in cash for each Vicodan prescription and seeing as many as 70 patients daily.

The couple are also accused of defrauding Medicare and Medicaid of nearly $8.7 million for facet joint injections that they never injected.
