India is the second largest source for counterfeit goods seized in 2008 in the United States. Nearly 81% of the counterfeits originated in China, up from 40 percent in 2007. India accounted for just 6 percent of the counterfeit goods. It was followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. In all, the U.S. government seized $270 million in counterfeit goods, with footwear topping the list at 38 percent of the total. They were followed by handbags and backpacks (11%) and pharmaceuticals 10%.
