An Indian origin person was fatally killed in a daytime shooting in Abbotsford town in Canada on Nov. 12.

Police have not arrested anyone in the shooting of Jagvir Malhi, 19. Police have also not said how Malhi’s killing is related to gang conflict, including whether he or someone he knew, was directly involved, abbynews.com reported on its site.

Malhi was studying Criminology at the University of the Fraser Valley and was in the basketball team of W.J. Mouat Secondary, from which he graduated in 2017.

Shortly after he was shot, the local police issued a tweet: “Abbotsford emergency services were called to the intersection of Simpson Rd and Ross Rd for reports of a shooting. AbbyPD Patrol Division officers arrived on scene and located an injured male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The male victim, a 19-year-old Abbotsford resident, was transported to hospital by air ambulance. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.”

According to local media, a witness said that the victim was shot dead in the head and had little chance of surviving.

In a statement by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) on Nov 13, IHIT Cpl. David Lee said, “This shooting occurred near a public school, a blatant disregard for the safety of the community. We are fortunate that school was not in session at this time. We believe this incident was not random and is linked to the ongoing gang conflict in the lower mainland.”

In September, three people, including one Indian national, were killed when a gunman opened fire in the lobby of a bank in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Indian was identified as 25-year old Pruthviraj Kandepi of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.

Earlier this year, an Indian American student was among those injured in the shooting incident that left 17 people dead at a Florida school. The injured Indian American student suffered minor injuries after getting hit by splinters, PTI reported.
