Indian Merchants Can Now Sell on Amazon Australia Marketplace

Amazon has added Australia in the global selling program for Indian merchants.

Indian sellers will soon be able to market their products at Amazon’s Australian marketplace, the company said on April 12, PTI reported.

“Our global selling Indian sellers can now sell on the Amazon Australia marketplace, expanding their international exposure and reach highly engaged online consumers from Australia,” Eric L Broussard, Amazon VP and head (international seller services) said, according to PTI. The Amazon Global Selling program was launched in India in 2015.

Indian merchants could until now sell in Amazon’s international marketplaces in 10 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom and Japan. In March, as many as 60 Indian sellers signed up as part of a pilot project to sell their products in Australia, Broussard said. Some of the categories, like books, home, apparel, office products, and shoes from India, are popular in Australia.

The company had earlier announced that global exports from Amazon sellers in India were up by 224 per cent in 2017. More than 32,000 sellers from India are part of Amazon’s global selling program. Among the products that are a big hit with international customers are Indian bedsheets, ghee, copper utensils and Chandrika soap.

Among the top product categories that are being exported by sellers from India on the ecommerce platform are handicraft items, home decor, kitchen linen, art supplies and writing instruments, ethnic wear and women’s dresses, tapestries and leather messenger bags. The number of Indian products on Amazon’s international marketplaces saw a 500 per cent rise in 2017.

“Selling globally across Amazon’s international marketplaces has allowed businesses to reach hundreds of millions of potential new customers. Sales from small and medium-sized business selling cross-border represent more than 25 per cent of Amazon seller sales,” Broussard was quoted as saying by PTI.

Earlier in April, Amazon announced the expansion of its global selling program by launching business-to-business (B2B) selling for Indian exporters. Through this launch, B2B sellers, manufacturers and exporters would be able to reach thousands of business customers across Amazon’s international marketplaces, the firm said in a statement.

Indian states with the maximum number of international exporters are Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, according to the Amazon export digest 2017, which was released last month. The top five cities that had the maximum number of international exporters were Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

Amazon pushed its record capital into India in 2017-18, with the infusion of Rs 1,950 crore ($306 million) in January 2018. The company pumped in Rs 2,900 crore in Amazon Seller Services in November last year.
