Indian IT Firm Wipro Launches New Center in Texas
Wipro plans to ramp up its headcount in Texas to over 2,000 in the next few years.
Wipro launched a new center in Plano, Texas, on March 27 with plans to ramp up the number of employees in the state to over 2,000 in the coming years, the company said in a statement.
The Texas Technology Center’s main focus will be development of niche capabilities in new and emerging technologies for Wipro’s clients, which include some of the most innovative companies in the United States.
The announcement of the new center followed Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s visit to Wipro’s facility in Bengaluru on March 27.
“The new facility will primarily house Wipro’s U.S. cyber security center, as well as serve as a hub for advanced analytics. The state-of-the-art 45,000-sq. ft center is designed to promote collaboration, spur creativity and enhance productivity,” the statement said.
To start off, this center will employ 150 people. Plans are in place to increase the workforce at this facility. In addition to the newly-launched center at Plano, Wipro has major operations in Dallas and Houston in Texas.
The company has a 26,000-sq. ft facility in Houston, which serves as a hub to drive digital business transformation for its clients from the energy sector. The IT company also plans to develop a digital pod at its Houston facility, where its clients can leverage design thinking to foster innovation.
“Our technology center in Plano is the latest milestone in our growing operations in Texas and is a testament to the local talent pool and robust support offered by the state to the technology sector,” Wipro CEO Abidali Z. Neemuchwala said in a statement.
Neemuchwala added that as a company with a sizable presence in the U.S. state and a deep relationship with the local community, Wipro is committed to delivering best-in-class services to its clients, hiring locally and contributing to STEM (science technology, engineering and math) education to create a better future.
“With more than 1,400 employees in Texas and major operations now in Plano, Dallas and Houston, Wipro is playing an important role in the Texas economy,” said Abbott, adding that Wipro is a valued partner in Texas, with initiatives ranging from investing in the future of Texas communities to lending support in the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
During the past decade, Wipro has invested over $2 billion in the United States. The firm has over 40 facilities across 23 states in the United States, and employs over 13,000 people in the country, with over 55 per cent of them being U.S. locals.
Over the past year, Wipro has recruited 120 graduates from local universities, including the University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at Dallas, among others.
