Indian Embassy in U.S. Starting Free Hindi and Sanskrit Classes

The classes are free for the members of public and one can register to study either one or both languages as the days of the classes are different. Commencement dates for these classes is yet to be announced.

The Indian embassy in the United States is starting weekly Hindi and Sanskrit classes. The classes will be held in its premises in Washington D.C and will be free for the people, the Indian Embassy said.

The Indian embassy announced the news about classes on its twitter handle.


The embassy said in its statement that the free weekly classes will be organized in the Consular Hall of the Indian Embassy in Washington D.C. and Dr. Moxraj, teacher of Indian culture will take the classes.

The statement further added that the classes for Hindi will be organized every Tuesday from 6 pm to 7 pm, while the classes for Sanskrit will be every Thursday from 6 pm to 7 pm.

Because the days for both languages are different, people can register to study both, the embassy said.

The embassy said, “You may enrol for Hindi, Sanskrit or both the classes. Those interested in attending the classes may please send an email giving their name, title, designation and class in which they wish to enrol. Please send your email to Dr. Moxraj at pic3.washington@mea.gov.in.”

While the days and timing of the classes has been announced, the dates are yet to be fixed.

Hindi is most spoken Indian language in United States. It is followed by Gujrati and Telugu, according to the American Community Data, released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Sept. 20. As per the survey, in 2000, the number of Hindi speakers was 317,057, which rose to 609,395 in 2010 and 863,077 in 2017. The 2016 American Community Survey also revealed that Hindi is the 11th most popular foreign language in the United States.
