Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oman on the last leg of his three-nation tour on Feb. 11, and addressed the Indian diaspora at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat. Modi talked of his government’s policy of “minimum government and maximum governance” during his address, PTI reported.

In his hour-long speech, the Indian PM took a dig at the Congress party and its “misgovernance” during its tenure. “The country cannot progress in the 21st Century with a style of misgovernance,” he said to the gathering. “The long list of scams (in previous regime) had harmed India’s image. We have worked hard to bring out the country from that phase of misgovernance.”

Modi also appreciated the hard work done by Indian nationals in the development of Oman while addressing a crowd of 34,000 NRIs in Muscat. The two countries signed an agreement on cooperation between the Foreign Service Institute, Ministry of External Affairs, India, and Oman’s Diplomatic Institute. Modi rounded off his Oman tour with a visit to the Shiva temple and Sultan Qaboos mosque in Muscat.

The script was no different during Modi’s visit to the United Arab Emirates. He addressed the Indian diaspora at Dubai Opera House on Feb. 11 morning. Emphasizing that the relationship between UAE and India isn’t just of trade, but of partnership as well, Modi unveiled the model of the first Hindu temple in Dubai, a city that is home to over three million Non-Resident Indians.

“I believe this temple will not be only unique in terms of architecture and splendor, but will also give a message of ‘vasudhaiva kutumbakam‘ to people across the world,” Modi said at the unveiling of the temple. Talking about how Gulf countries have a “small India” in them, he said: “India is proud of the fact that more than 30 lakh Indians are part of the development process of Gulf countries.”

Modi also talked about governance, GST, and demonetization, and how his government is helping fulfill dreams of common people. “We all have experienced days of disappointment, doubt and difficulty where we’ve felt nothing could work out. Earlier the common man would ask if something was possible. Today, within four years, we have changed that mentality and thinking. Today people ask, ‘Modi ji, tell us when it will happen’,” he said.

The Indian PM also talked about the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business’s ranking, in which India leapfrogged its way to the 100th rank. “In 2014, India was placed 142 in the Ease of Doing Business rankings. It was easier to spot us if we started from below. Today, we are ranked 100. India’s leap in World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business rankings from 142 to 100 is unprecedented. But we are not satisfied at this, we want to do better. We will do whatever it takes to make it possible.”

In UAE, Modi also met business leaders from Gulf Cooperation Council and talked of opportunities present in India. He also addressed the sixth World Government Summit, where he stressed upon the need for technology and using it with caution. He called for all the Asian countries to unite and share their experiences with each other for a better and developed future. Modi also met President Kyrgyzstan Sapar Isakov on the sidelines of the World Government Summit.
