Indian External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has requested the United Arab Emirates to prevent Indian women who are entering the country with visit visas from getting employment visas, stating that women often get exploited under false promises of employment in UAE.

According to Swaraj, Indian workers who try to get employed through illegal means often encounter false job promises and end up getting in troubles. She also asked the UAE government to arrest illegal agents who bring Indian workers into the country by offering fraud job offers, adding “Women among them are the worst affected.”

While addressing the Indian community in Indian Social and Cultural Center (ISC), Swaraj said, “I have asked all chief ministers to arrest such unscrupulous recruitment agents who exploit jobseekers and put them behind bars,” Gulf News quoted.

She added that women who come to the country on tourist visas and get employment permit are the ones who are most oppressed.

She also requested Indians to always go for registered agents to get a secured job in UAE, stating she believes in “Safe Migration.” “Those who use illegal channels often do not know where they are heading to. They don’t know their rights and protective measures available for them,” the minister was quoted as saying by Gulf News.

She also thanked the Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Navdeep Singh Suri for arranging an event with the Indian community, saying the community members are the “permanent ambassadors” of India in UAE. “If they want to know the real India, they will get to know it through you,” she said.

She also said that India has rescued 233,000 Indian workers who faced adversities regarding work and migration across the world over the last four years, Gulf News reported.
