A former U.S. immigration official has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for taking a $100,000 bribe to bring two Indians into the country illegally.

Hasmukh Patel, 53, of McDonough, Ga., was convicted of receiving the bribe from a U.S. resident to bring his brother and sister-in-law to the United States. Patel, then a adjudicator with the immigration service, sponsored the couple as household help. Consular officials became suspicious when he submitted a similar request for another couple.
