Hanuman: Summoned To Court

By
A judge in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, has summoned the Hindu gods Ram and Hanuman, to appear before him to resolve a 20-year-old dispute over a 1.4 acre plot housing two temples.

Judge Sunil Kumar Singh published newspaper advertisements declaring: “You failed to appear in court despite notices sent by a peon and later through registered post. You are hereby directed to appear before the court personally.”

The temple priest is staking a claim to the land, which local authorities assert belong to the two deities. Judge Singh served notices on the deities, which were returned as undeliverable, prompting the newspaper announcements. The priest’s lawyer Bijan Rawani wants to depose the Gods, saying, “Since the land has been donated to the gods, it is necessary to make them a party to the case.”
