GO FIGURE ANSWERS
A surprisingly large number of our readers — 66 in all, nearly six times the number to correctly guess the previous month — accurately identified the photo in our June Go Figure contest as that of a lotus stem, also known as kamal kakri or bhasinda. Your other guesses ranged from pineapple slices, honeycomb cereal, achapam (a desert from Kerala), rose cakes, rosettes, chopped okra, biscuits karela (bitter gourd), peppy, jack fruit and cheese.
The large number of correct entries are striking testimony to the fact that whatever else we might lose in the process of assimilation, nobody messes with our food. Submissions came from all 51 states as well as from Canada, Hong Kong and India. The largest number of correct entries came from New York (13), followed by California (10) and New Jersey (8).
The winner of the $30 prize, selected by lottery from among the 66 readers who answered correctly is Vimla Aggarwal of San Ramon, Calif.
