Corruption, sexual harassment, racism. The winner is disqualified. The loser drops out.
These are the headlines from the election for president to the venerable Oxford Union Society, one of the world’s foremost debating clubs, which boasts five British prime ministers and former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto among its members. Acting on a complaint from the losing candidate, the 185-year-old society stripped Krishna Omkar of the presidency for violating its rules by actively soliciting votes. However, the losing candidate who had protested the election results in the first place, quit the society complaining that vulgar and threatening messages were sent to her cell phone by other Oxford Union officers. Ben Tansey, the secretary of the society, won the presidency in a repoll after Onkar was disqualified from running again. |
