Commonwealth Games Chief Arrested

Suresh Kalmadi, chief organizer of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, which were beset with construction delays and financial irregularities, has been arrested on charges of corruption.

The Central Bureau of Investigation said Kalmadi was arrested “for conspiracy to cause favor to a company in Switzerland while procuring timers and scoring equipment for the Games.”

 

The Games, which cost over $6 billion dollars, were expected to bolster India’s image on the world stage, much as the Olympics had done for China, but became a national embarrassment amidst allegations of corruption, shoddy construction, and mismanagement. An estimated $1.8 billion is suspected of being misappropriated.
