An Indian-origin man was arrested for drunk driving in the United Kingdom after a bitter spat with his partner who reported him to the police.

Kamaljit Sagoo, 44, was banned from driving for 17 months and fined £583 after he pleaded guilty at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court for drunk driving and driving without insurance, Chronicle Live reported. The court also ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £58 victim surcharge.

The incident took place at night on June 18 when Sagoo, who works as a plasterer, was celebrating his 44th birthday with his partner at their home in Longbenton, Newcastle. The couple got into a fight and Sagoo decided to drive to a nearby Tesco store to get some cigarette papers, the court was told. His girlfriend then called the police and reported him for driving in an inebriated state.

Sagoo was then made to pull over by the police, and failed to clear the “breath” test.

“Unusually, he has been reported by his partner for driving while drunk and he was later found by police in the driver’s seat of his car,” prosecutor Lorna Rimell was quoted as saying at the North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court in north-east England by the publication. “He then failed a roadside breath test,” she added.

Sagoo blew 61 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath while the legal limit is 35 micrograms, according to the court.

Sagoo also admitted that he was driving his Audi 4 without insurance when he went to get Rizla papers.

His lawyer, Annalisa Moscardini, told the court, “It was his birthday and, as things go, it was a very bad birthday for him.

“He had been out with his partner and there had been an argument and he had gone to get Rizla papers.

“He felt fine to drive. His partner had been angry at him, she’s phoned the police.

“Needless to say, that relationship is now over.”
