Why The Mattis Resignation Is A Loss For U.S.-India Relations
An ongoing trade dispute notwithstanding, U.S.-India ties have fared relatively well under the Trump administration, particularly when compared to the damage U.S. foreign relations have sustained with countries like Canada, France and Germany in recent months.
In a decision that appeared to catch the White House by surprise, General James Mattis announced last week that he would be resigning as the United States Secretary of Defense. He had been serving in the post since the start of the Trump administration nearly two years ago. The move comes less than a month after he hosted his Indian counterpart, Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in Washington for talks that were hailed by both sides as highly productive.
