Balachandran Kavungalparambath, a business manager from Citibank in the United Kingdom, was sentenced on Oct. 23 at the Birmingham Crown Court to 15 months in jail after being caught by a pedophile hunting group. He will also be added to the sex offenders register for 10 years and has a sexual harm prevention order issued against him for 10 years.

Kavungalparambath will also be deported to India once the jail time is over. Citibank fired the sex offender from his job after the incident came to light.

The 38-year-old man, who was working in east London’s Citibank branch, said he believed that he was “grooming” a 14-year-old girl though online chats. He was supposed to meet her at a hotel in Birmingham on Sept. 10. He instead encountered the Internet Interceptors, a group working to nab pedophiles in the United Kingdom. The Indian man initially denied the accusations but when the gift perfume, Viagra and condoms fell out of his bag, he accepted the accusations made against him.

“But as I said, I was supposed to have a chat with her, it was not with the intention of getting her into a bed and having sex with her,” he said initially. He added that he believed the girl was 18 and did not go there with the intention of having sex.

The vigilante group had posted the video live on Facebook when they accosted him. One of their team members posed as a teenage girl while speaking to Kavungalparambath, who is a married man with a child. In the video, he can be heard crying that he would lose his job and would have to leave the country. He said he was never inappropriate in his chats. However, one of the team members reading the chats out to the man revealed that the encounter was supposed to be sexual in nature.

The vigilante group was commended by the court for the work they did.
