Kavita Devi Wrestles in WWE Bout Wearing Salwar-Kameez
Wrestler Kavita Devi wins Indian hearts by entering a WWE ring wearing salwar-kameez.
The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), that has brought to viewers firebrand performances from Indian male wrestlers like reigning champion Jinder Mahal and the Great Khali, now has a woman wrestler from the country in its league. Kavita Devi, who hails from Haryana, recently locked horns with New Zealand’s Dakota Kai in the first round of the Mae Young Classic tournament, wearing a saffron salwar-kameez with a dupatta tied tightly around her waist.
Kavita Devi Wins Hearts
Even though Kavita Devi lost the game to Dakota Kai, her performance received positive response from all corners. Social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook are flooded with praise on Kavita, with many WWE fans calling her the pride of India. A video clip of the fight, uploaded on August 31, fetched over three million views in five days.
Kavita’s decision to ditch the usual jazzy dressing style followed by WWE participants in favour of a simple salwar-kameez sent fans in a tizzy.
From Policewoman to Professional Wrestler
A former officer in Haryana Police, Kavita Devi first made headlines when she won the powerlifting gold medal for India in the 2016 South Asian Games. She then got famous on social media when one of her wrestling videos with BB Bull Bull, another Indian woman wrestler, went viral.
Kavita’s skill in wrestling was first noticed by the Great Khali. After watching the video of Kavita-BB Bull Bull fight, Khali invited her to his wrestling promotion and training academy.
Kavita has expressed her strong desire to become the first female champion from India in the WWE. “I have full faith in myself and I have the support of Indian wrestling fans behind me,” she told the Times of India. “I want to be the first WWE Women’s Champion from India and I will give my best to achieve that.”
