Infantile Journalism

The story behind The Washington Times' story on infanticide in India.

By
The Washington Times, the right wing newspaper owned by the Moonies, published a hard-hitting four part series at the end of February on female infanticide in India titled “Killing Eve: India’s Abortion Crisis.”

A long-time former reporter at the newspaper, George Archibald, reports on his blog the following exchange between Times‘ managing editor Francis B. Coombs Jr. and foreign desk editor David Jones about the series: “In the discussion with colleagues on The Washington Times foreign desk, editor Jones said: “The reason we are running this story is that Coombs thinks all the aborted girls means that Indian men will be immigrating to the United States to marry our girls.’ That is an exact quote, what Jones told his colleagues on the foreign desk.”

Archibald also alleges, “Coombs has told me and others repeatedly that he favors abortion because he sees it as a way to eliminate black and other minority babies.”

Coombs did not respond to Little India’s email requests to confirm the authenticity of Archibald’s comments. It does seem like a bizarre journalistic rationale. But then, that’s why the Moonies are called the Moonies.
