54 NRIs On Interpol List

Interpol alerts have been issued against 54 Non Resident Indians accused of dowry crimes and desertion in India and another 35 people will be added soon. 

According to Crime Investigation Department (CID), extradition proceedings are currently underway against 15 people.

According to the Times of India, 89 cases have been filed against NRIs for dowry related crimes, desertion and economic offences. The vast majority of these cases, 50, were filed in Hyderabad and Cyberabad. 

While only two cases were filed against NRIs in 2003, the number jumped to 82 in 2007 and according to CID 17 cases were filed in January alone of this year.

According to one estimate, up to 20,000 women have been abandoned by their non-resident Indian (NRI) husbands. An Interpol alert puts out an international warrant at airports and checkposts all over the world.
