17,000 Farmer Suicides

| More than 17,000 Indian farmers committed suicide in 2009, according to India’s National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The Tata Institute of Social Sciences estimates that 150,000 farmers have killed themselves during the past decade, principally over apprehensions about losing their land over unpaid debt.
India has one of the world’s highest rates of suicide. The NCRB study found that 127,151 people took their own lives in 2009. Non governmental organizations estimate that many suicides are never recorded in official databases. Accidental Deaths in India
Maharashtra accounts for almost a sixth of all accidental deaths in India. However, Puducherry, followed by D & N Haveli and Chhatisgarh have the highest rate of accidental deaths. West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh states reported the highest numbers of suicides in the country, although the rate was highest in Punducherry, Sikkim and the Andoman & Nicobar Islands. |
