An unidentified person was booked by the Chandigarh police for allegedly using a stolen passport belonging to a Non-Resident Indian to fly out of India. UK national Hira Singh alleged that his passport was misused, after which a case of cheating and criminal conspiracy was registered by the police.
A case was registered at the Sector-39 police station in Chandigarh last month following Singh’s complaint, and he was given an emergency passport on Dec.27, valid until Jan. 6, the Hindustan Times reported.
Singh had applied for an exit permit to leave India for the United Kingdom, the police said, according to the report. Following a verification of his passport and visa particulars, it was discovered that Singh arrived in India on Dec. 4 at the Delhi airport, and that he left the country on Dec. 15 from the Mumbai airport. However, Singh is still present in India, and was staying at Sector-41 in Chandigarh.
A case under Sections 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC has been registered. A special report was filed by the in-charge of the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) branch.
A detailed report of the matter was sent to the Intelligence Bureau, and the Ministry of Home Affairs. A request to get Singh’s immigration record checked by the Bureau of Immigration was also sent, the Tribune reported, which received a reply showing that a UK national — Hira Singh — has already left India for the United Kingdom, although his image from the camera may appear to be different.
