The $1 Million Stain

A cleaner at a museum in Dortmund, Germany, permanently damaged a $1 million art installation after she mistook the artist’s discoloration on the piece for a stain.

The installation, “When It Starts Dripping From The Ceiling,” by famed artist Martin Kippenberger had a brown painted bowl that was discolored by dripping water.

The cleaning woman mistook it for a stain and scrubbed it clean. “It is now impossible to return it to its original state,” according to a museum spokesperson.
