Indian mobile telephone users are paying out hefty premiums to get fancy numbers.
State owned BSNL’s recent auction of fancy numbers yielded $250,000, including $22,500 from a bidder for the number 9864000005. Two other numbers 9864000001 and 9864000018 attracted bids for $21,250 and $18,.750 respectively. The highest paid thus far is by a Ludhiana-based businessman Amit Malhotra who paid almost $40,000 for the number 9780000000 from Hutch. Malhotra told reporters that he borrowed money from friends and relatives to pay for the number. |
