Medical Correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta and filmmaker Michael Moore duked it out on CNN’s Larry King Live after Moore accused Gupta of doing a hatchet job in a report challenging the factual accuracy of some claims in his movie Sicko.
Gupta challenged Moore’s assertion that universal healthcare systems in France and Canada are largely free, unlike America’s exorbitantly expensive private insurance programs. These countries pay for medical costs through taxes and also have far longer waiting periods, Gupta argued. Moore countered that Americans pay almost twice as much in private insurance and speedier access to healthcare is largely achieved by taking 47 million uninsured people out of the waiting line. For all the acrimony, Gupta acknowledged: “I thought it was good movie and I wanted to say that. I think it strikes at the irrefutable fact – it’s broken.” |
