Amitabh Bachchan is trading places with his nemesis, the bloodthirsty Gabbar Singh in a remake of Sholay, India’s greatest movie classic.
In the original film which catapulted him to international fame in 1975, Bachchan saves a village from the foul mouthed bandit. But Bachchan says he had wanted to play Gabbar even in the original movie. The role went to Amjad Khan, who cemented his reputation as the country’s greatest villain legend whose whose threatening dialogues are well-known throughout India. The new Sholay directed by Ram Gopal Varma reinterprets the movie in a different time and place. The original Sholay was set in the treacherous ravines of central India. The remake is set in Mumbai and Gabbar Singh is not a brutal dacoit, but rather the suave head of a crime syndicate. “Seeing Bachchan play Gabbar, Amjad Khan will be eclipsed from people’s memories,” Varma told the media. |
