Former U.S. President Barack Obama will be in New Delhi on Dec. 1 to conduct a town hall with young leaders in India. He seeks to motivate and facilitate growth for young leaders through his Obama Foundation.
Obama has already hosted events in Germany, Indonesia and Brazil. At Chicago in the United States, the foundation held an event in October 2017 where two Indians, Trisha Shetty — who started She Says — and Sachana Krishnan — who started a campaign called Living Stories — participated. Shetty aims to educate and empower women and men to take action against sexual abuse. Krishnan works with communities to normalize mental health issues and empower people to get the help they seek.
“As one of the most culturally, religiously, linguistically, and ethnically diverse nations on earth, India’s democracy shows us the collective strength of engagement within and across communities. Most of India’s 1 billion people are under 35 years old, an engaged and passionate generation that includes Members of Parliament, Village Sarpanchs, scientists, artists, athletes, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders who are finding innovative ways to create positive change across India — change that benefits the world,” the statement released by Obama Foundation reads.
The foundation wants young Indians to apply for the event where Obama will be present. The town hall can be watched live on obama.org.
“I can’t wait to hear more about the unique initiatives young Indian leaders have started in their communities,” said Obama.
The U.S. leader was in India with his wife Michelle in January 2015 as the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations.
