Mud Bath For The Taj

The Taj Mahal’s domed edifice will be caked in mud for two months every two or three years as part of a clean-up operation.

The 17th century mausoleum is yellowing as a result of air pollution in its environment. Cleaning up involves packing it in mud, which absorbs the dirt buildup as it dries. The mud is washed off after two months, restoring the marbles immaculate beauty. The process is estimated to cost $230,000.

Nearly 3 million tourists visit the mausoleum every year.
