A Marxist Californian may be the first foreigner to win a student election in India.
Tyler Walker Williams, a Berkeley native and a student for the past six years at Jawaharlal Nehru University, was elected vice president of the JNU Student Union on the ticket of Marxist party. Williams denounced the Iraq war and American foreign policy, at a press conference, “The U.S. is trying to spread imperialism. Seventy percent of people in America also oppose George Bush and his policies.” Getting into the Indian parliament is one thing. But to win a student election in India, now that’s one for the records. |
