India is the fastest growing source of illegal immigrants, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The agency estimates that there are 270,000 undocumented Indians in the United States, a 125 percent increase since 2000, the largest percentage increase for any country. Private estimates place the illegal Indian immigrant population as high as 400,000. There are an estimated 6.6 million Mexicans in the country, the largest of any group. However, the San Jose Mercury reported that if current trends hold, India would trail only Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala as a source of illegal immigration in three years. |
