An Indian-origin Canadian Member of Parliament, Darshan Kang, has been accused of sexual harassment by a staffer. Kang, who belongs to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party, was elected to the House of Commons for the first time in the federal elections in 2015.
The chief government whip’s office confirmed that the House chief human resources officer Pierre Parent was conducting an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against Kang.
Ongoing Investigation
“We were made aware of the allegations and referred them, as per the House of Commons process, to the chief human resources officer,” Charles-Eric Lepine, chief of staff to Chief Government Whip Pablo Rodriguez, told The Hill Times.
The allegations were made by a female staffer who works at Kang’s constituency office in Calgary. There has been no response from the office of the accused on the incident. A spokesperson for the Calgary Police Service told the Hindustan Times that they are unaware of any official complaint that has been made and that they would have jurisdiction if a criminal case is filed.
Born in India, Kang, 66, moved to Canada in 1970. He holds a pre-medical degree from the University of Indore and was a commercial realtor before entering politics. Before he went on to defeat the sitting Conservative Party MP and become the first Liberal Party candidate to be elected to the House of Commons from Calgary in nearly 50 years, he was twice elected to the provincial assembly.
