An Indian man and his family was arrested in the United States on Sept. 2 for abusing and beating his wife. The man’s parents reportedly flew from India to abuse their daughter-in-law, and joined their son to physically assault her.
Devbir Kalsi, 33, used to regularly beat his wife, Silky Gaind, according to Florida’s Hillsborough county sheriff’s office, the Tampa Bay Times reported. He had told his parents that she was “disobedient”. Hearing this, his 67-year-old father Jasbir Kalsi and mother Bhupinder Kalsi, 61, travelled from India to “counsel and discipline” his wife.
On Sept. 1, the argument between the couple ended with Kalsi hitting Gaid “repeatedly and forcefully”. As she tried defending herself, his parents joined in the fracas and began beating her too. They left bruises on her face, neck and torso. Gaind’s one-year-old daughter, who was in her arms at the time, was also struck in the face.
Her husband also held a knife to her throat and threatened to stab her.
The case came to police’s notice when Gaind made a distress call to her parents in India, telling them that she was being beaten and held captive against her will in her husband’s house. When the authorities arrived at the Kalsi home at 6.30 am at Sept. 2, no one answered their repeated knocking on the door. Gaind then tried to open the door and screamed for help, asking the police to save her and her child.
The deputies had to force their way in since Kalsi was blocking the door. When the officers tried to arrest him, his parents confronted the police. Gaind was found badly bruised and beaten. Investigations revealed that she had been suffering abuse for a long time. Gaind and her child were taken to a safe place.
Since all the parties involved are Indian nationals, the Florida Abuse Hotline as well as the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement were notified.
“ Awful, nobody should go through that,” an unidentified neighbour was quoted as saying by the news channel Fox 13. “It really is heartbreaking. There’s a brand new baby. But who beats their wife up and his mother and dad help him? Who does that?”
Kalsi was charged with false imprisonment, felony, battery, child abuse, and denying access to 911. Jasbir, his father, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon (knife), false imprisonment, child abuse, and denying access to 911. His mother Bhupinder Kalsi has been charged with battery, domestic violence and failure to report child abuse. All three may be deported back to India.
