Indian citizens abroad will soon be able to get Indian passports within 48 hours from Indian missions in their current country of residence.

Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh inaugurated “Passport Seva” project at Indian Embassy in Washington on Nov.24 and said that Indian missions across the world will soon be issuing the passports to the citizens overseas within 2 days, reported PTI.

Passport offices at Indian missions are linked digitally with India based data center, which will speed up the process of issuing a passport, he added.
Raveesh Kumar, Official spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), took to the Twitter to share this news while saying, “MEA aims to operationalize all Embassy/Consulates in next 3-4months that would transform passport delivery services.”

News agency PTI quoted Navtej Singh Sarna, Indian Ambassador to the U.S. as saying, “This is actually going to quantitatively and qualitatively improve our passport services immensely, both in the scope of the applications that can be handled and also in the way they will be handled and the way they will be integrated into the overall much better consular services.”

“The Passport Seva Project is part of the flagship Passport Seva Programme of Ministry of External Affairs and was first inaugurated outside India at the High Commission of India in London on Oct.24, 2018,” said Embassy of India, Washington DC, in its statement.

In order to make passport services more accessible and user friendly for citizens in the U.S., the first such service was launched at the Consulate General of India in New York on Nov.21, 2018. Similar service will be launched at the Consulate General of India in Atlanta on Nov.25, 2018.
