Anupam Kher, a leading Indian actor, is pulling out of a film on Adolf Hitler, following protests by Indian Jewish groups.
Kher, who was to play the role of Hitler in Dear Friend Hitler, said “Considering the ill-will that the project is generating among my fans, I wish to withdraw from it as I respect their sentiments.”
According to the movie’s director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar, Dear Friend Hitler would explore Hitler’s “insecurities, his charisma, his paranoia and his sheer genius.” He told the media: “It shows Hitler’s love for India and how he indirectly contributed to Indian independence. It also depicts the struggle for survival of the lesser known Indian Legion soldiers who were left in Germany by Subhas Bose to fight for India’s independence and Germany’s prestige.” Nevertheless, Kumar insisted, the movie would not glorify Hitler. “Those who are protesting against the film have got it wrong.” |
