A
University of Maryland study reports that contrary to widespread belief foreign
workers earned more than U.S. tech professionals.
The study
“Are Foreign IT Workers Cheaper? U.S. Visa Policies and Compensation of
Information Technology Professionals,” by Sunil Mithas
and Henry Lucas, found:
“IT professionals without U.S. citizenship earn approximately 8.1% more than
those with U.S. citizenship; IT professionals on an H-1B or other work visa
earn approximately 7.9% more than those with U.S. citizenship; and IT
professionals with a green card earn approximately 13.6% more than those with
U.S. citizenship or work visa holders.”
The report
says foreign workers earn more than U.S. IT professionals “because of their
intangible human capital, rigorous screening and selection processes, and
willingness to work across borders.”
