Girls Outnumber Boys In Delhi

For the first time, births of girls outnumbered those of boys in Delhi. In 2008, there were 1004 girl births for 1,000 boy births.

Selective abortions and cultural discrimination toward girls has long suppressed girl births all over India. But in recent years government campaigns and prosecutions have made a dent against the practice. Under the Delhi government’s Ladli scheme, the government grants $200 on the birth of a baby girl and makes subsequent payments as she passes through school.
