The $1.2 billion acquisition of Scottish distiller Whyte & Mackay Ltd. by Vijay Mallya’s UB Group will catapult the Indian distiller to the world’s second largest maker of spirits after Pernod Ricard of France.

The acquisition will expand Whyte and Mackay to Asian markets, while also opening access of Europe and North America to the UB Group, beside adding Scotch Whisky to its portfolio.

“Scotch has been a missing link in our portfolio. With the acquisition of Whyte & Mackay, we now have a captive supply source and excellent (Scotch) brands, which we will immediately introduce in China, Middle East and India,” Mallya said.
