Deathly Hallows

A Harry Potter actress was threatened with death by her family for romancing a Hindu man.

According to police, Afshan Azad, 22, who played Padma Patil in four of the five film adaptations of JK Rowling’s novels, including Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was attacked by family members who disapproved of her Hindu boyfriend. She escaped out of her bedroom window and fled her home city.

Her father, Abul Azad, 54, and brother, Ashraf, 28, were arrested and charged with threatening to kill her. Ashraf pled guilty to assault and is awaiting sentencing.

The prosecutor Richard Vardon QC, told the court that the actress was assaulted by her brother at the family home in Longsight, Manchester, in May: “The reason for the assault, apparently her association with a Hindu man, that apparently being disapproved of by her family who are Muslim.”

Afshan refused to press charges, however, and the charges of threatening to kill her against her father and brother have been dismissed.
